WARDOGS Factions: LONESTAR, VALKYRA and MANTICORE
The three WARDOGS factions explained - who LONESTAR, VALKYRA and MANTICORE are, what they represent, and what your faction choice actually changes in a match.
WARDOGS is a three-team game, and those three teams have names, flags and politics. Here is who they are — and, more usefully, what picking one actually does to your match.
The three factions
| Faction | Who they are |
|---|---|
| LONESTAR | Western paramilitary heavy-hitters — the private-military end of Western power projection |
| VALKYRA | Restorationists who want to return the Soviet People’s Republic to greatness |
| MANTICORE | The Kingdom of Persia’s shadow army, operating out of Tehran |
All three fight over the same ground: the derelict industrial mountains of Eastern Europe, where WARDOGS is set. The setting does a lot of work — a collapsed industrial region is exactly the kind of place three deniable armies would be sent to contest, and it explains a battlefield full of structures worth fortifying and worth levelling.
What faction choice changes
This is the part people get wrong. Faction identity is narrative and cosmetic.
- No confirmed faction-locked weapons. Nobody has announced exclusive weapons, vehicles or abilities per faction — and no statement rules them out either.
- Camouflage patterns are branded to factions, and camos are cosmetic. They are also earned, never purchasable with real money.
- Your loadout comes from the buy menu, not your flag. You purchase weapons, gear and vehicles per life from your cash balance, as described in the weapons guide and the cash economy guide.
So pick the one you like the look of. Your effectiveness comes from where you stand and what you bought, not which army you joined.
Three teams, one square
The faction structure exists to support the format. Three symmetrical armies contesting one Control Zone produce dynamics a two-team shooter cannot:
- The leader becomes the target. Both trailing factions have a reason to attack whoever is scoring.
- Temporary cooperation is real. With proximity voice chat carrying across all three teams, informal truces happen — and break.
- Every fight has an audience. A won engagement often means two weakened teams and one healthy third party arriving.
Open questions
Things not yet confirmed, which this page will update on:
- Whether factions gain any mechanical identity during Early Access
- Whether faction assignment is chosen, balanced automatically, or persistent
- How deep the faction narrative goes beyond the setting and the camos
